Due to the recent security vulnerability in the Linux kernel (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=516949) which we have seen being exploited in the wild, we will be continuing to upgrade kernel versions for all shared/reseller servers on Friday night. Please note that the current Linux kernel has been patched on all servers and as such your server is still secure from any vulnerabilities, this is just a follow-up update on the kernel version. For some servers this may require a reboot but the downtime will be very minimal barring any unforeseen circumstances.

  • Maintenance Date: Friday, October 9, 2009.
  • Maintenance Time: Beginning at 1:00pm GMT.

Due to the recent issues with the Supervisor card on our core routers, we were forced to replace with a cold standby in order to ensure your uptime. We sent our primary supervisor back to our supplier and have gotten it replaced with a brand new unit. We will be swapping our cold standby in favor of this new unit in order to reduce our MTBF on this core router.

You may notice some intermittent network outages between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12 p.m EET on November 27th, 2008.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have cause, however we are determined to keep our infrastructure setup fault resistant as well as tolerant. This is a necessary step in order to obtain that goal, and keep your servers up 24x7x365. Thanks for your understanding and patience on this issue.

Beginning Monday 12/01/08, all shared and reseller servers will have direct socket access to outgoing port 25 disabled. Scripts will be allowed to make local connections to port 25 to send mail. This will not affect you if you are using a PHP script that utilizes the mail() function as most popular PHP scripts do such as Wordpress, Joomla, etc. It will only affect a small number of scripts that connect directly to remote SMTP servers to send mail. At around 10.30am EET, the network operations team noticed a unexpected decrease in traffic into and out of the datacenter. This is unexpected as traffic is normally ramping back up during the early AM hours. The on-site team began to investigate the issue.

The issue grew worse with time and the lead network administrator was on-route to datacenter. Once on site we noticed the main supervisor on the primary Cisco 6509 was showing errors and had hit a fault. At this time we forced the change to our secondary router.

Connectivity was restored 1.22 hrs from start to finish.

We fully understand that this has caused significant disruption to a large number people and we understand that for all of our customers, their businesses depend on the smooth operation of our network.

This is a responsibility we take very seriously.

We have found the fault that stopped the routers from automatically failing over and have corrected this. Our replacement supervisor for the primary router is being installed.
